REVIEW: The Haunt at Hellizondo
Throughout the years the playful world of The Haunt at Hellizondo has been an incredibly enjoyable experience. Normally located in Simi Valley, Hellizondo has temporarily moved to a new location in Canoga Park for the 2020 season. This new location features a display instead of a maze, but still employs the signature Hellizondo psychedelic cajun aesthetic. Handmade props, animatronics, and creepy shacks are all painted in dayglo colors, creating a vibe of a ghostly acid trip at a Louisiana swamp party.
One of our favorite features of Hellizondo is the animatronics. An undead head peeks out at you from under the lid of an oak barrel, while ghosts float up and down from within a haunted shack. The moonshine distillery - a wonderful, handcrafted metallic device - contains a glowing red fire that lights up its grill to create a frowning face (think of Emperor Zurg from Toy Story 2). The atmospheric lights of Hellizondo complement each other beautifully in shades of neon green, orange, and purple...creating a sense of playful eeriness and mystery.
The Haunt at Hellizondo is truly a great haunt and we spent a solid hour admiring it. As Halloween approaches, we highly suggest you stop by this bewitching and family-friendly display. But, a word of caution - don’t drink Hellizondo’s poisonous moonshine - unless you want to turn into a zombie!
