REVIEW: STRAITE TO HALE PRESENTS “HORRORAMA”

Years ago we lived across from a film studio that was getting rid of hundreds of flats and props. As we watched the stage load all of these pieces curbside we made a post on our instagram that these were available for pick up if any builders wanted them. To our surprise, Straite to Hale's owners, Mark Straite and Ron Hale, immediately showed up with a massive truck and took everything. Though we didn’t know it at the time, Straite to Hale were on their way to quickly expand while they started to oversee building mazes everywhere from Six Flags to the Winchester Mystery House. How quickly they made it work is incredible when you consider their start was a modest front yard haunt in the quiet Los Angeles suburb of Rancho Cucamonga.

When we first became aware of them they were still doing an incredible Western themed haunt named "Demon Creek". This maze had multi-tiered ghost town builds - similar to Knott’s Scary Farm and Fear Farm - filled with spectres and pneumatic surprises. For this season they continue their funhouse theme which debuted last year, which for 2024 is entitled "Horrorama".

The first thing you notice when you show up is the impressive, very large carnival exterior. As you wait in queue a hanged man (who is triggered from guests within the maze) falls into view from behind a window as weird clowns and scare actors on stilts run in and out around you. Inside you encounter all of the tricks that Straite to Hale excels at - spinning rooms, cinematic environments, and attacks of high pressure, pneumatically triggered compressed air. It's presentation is very Peewee's Playhouse meets Beetlejuice and emphasized by their incredible high energy scare actors who can come from behind you, the sides, or even from above.

Horrorama is a mandatory visit for any seasoned haunter. The high octane world that they have been able to create and make larger than life is impressive. Straite to Hale, in the world of DIY haunts, continues to prove that they are capable of creating some of the most impressive mazes for their neighborhood every single year.
