REVIEW: SHIVER
A few years ago the Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) dominated the haunt scene. Pre pandemic you could spend a night out there and attend multi mazes like Beware the Dark Realm, The Farm, Club Fear, Pumkin Jack’s, and Shiver - to name a few. Fast forward to 2024 and many of those attractions have either slowed down or, more tragically, have gone dark completely. With one of our favorites, Shiver, stopping their home haunt completely with the exception of a one season collaboration with the beloved, but also extinct, SCV attraction Bones Gulch.
When we saw the announcement that Shiver was back for 2024 (notably now as a display in place of their usual maze), we couldn't have been more excited. Built by the couple Gwen and David, these haunts are often gorey, filled with chaos, and highly expressive. Shiver has been greatly missed and their return was met with great celebration by the haunt community.
This suburban front yard display showcases Shiver's signature pandamonium. With their background as punk rockers (Gwens favorite band is Red Kross!) their haunt can at times feel like the pace of a Black Flag song. There display contains tons of odd and strange characters lurking in the fog like a mutilated body draining into a pool and a massive chicken head being charred on a skewer - timed to spew out an absurd amount of smoke. Gwen even brings her legendary mischievous scare actor energy as she stands absolutely still while posing as a monster prop. She then suddenly springs to life - frightening to the core the random people coming by to check out their neighbors' cool yard.
Thank Satan that Shiver is back! Their energy and what they contribute creatively to the haunt world every season was greatly missed. While the future is uncertain on what they will do next, if anything at all, we hope this Halloween encourages them to share their creations for many more seasons to come.
