review: samhain’s lot
Behind thick, purple fog and glowing cobwebs lies Samhain's Lot - a beautifully crafted yard display that offers a trip through the history of Halloween scares. This awesome haunt, created within the confines of a Rancho Cucamonga suburban yard, is experienced by walking along the sidewalk. The scares of Samhain’s Lot are jam-packed, creating a truly entertaining and captivating haunt display.
Our visit began with a trip through vintage Halloween frights. This section of the yard had many “wait for it” scares, including a mysterious character far down a dark alleyway and zombie hands mechanically pushing through the garage door. If you look carefully at the second floor you will notice a sporadically illuminated Michael Myers glowering at the neighborhood. This cool effect was reminiscent of both the Evil Queen in the window of her castle at Disneyland and the old ghost Sailor from the legendary and now defunct House of Restless Spirits.
Further along the yard was a sinister cemetery highlighted by black lights. This area was filled with skeletons and seeping fog as Sam from Trick 'r Treat stood watch. Giant spiders with red eyes engulfed the property’s home. Nearby, a witch stood on the porch of a decrepit cabin, talking creepily to anyone who dared approach. The sound and lighting effects of this particular area were very impressive and added an additional layer of immersion to this truly enjoyable Halloween experience.
This haunt really has everything and then some: demons pulling water from wells, enormous skeletons with hologram eyes, haunted trees, jack-o’-lanterns, spooky scarecrows, and more. If you look hard enough there are even nods to other local haunts - like props incorporated from Rotten Apple, Sinister Pointe, and Hellsir. A visit to Samhain’s Lot is worth the trip to Rancho Cucamonga if you are looking for that much-needed Halloween fix!
