review: MAGIC OF THE JACK o’Lanterns

While we definitely have a preference for gorey and jump scare haunted houses, we are often asked what events are mellow and scaredy cat-friendly. While these types of haunts, such as Silverlake’s Pumpkinfest or Boney Island, can be harder to find than not, we now have an additional suggestion to add to the list: the Inland Empire’s Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns.

Since this was our first year attending - we weren’t sure what we were in for. To our delight we wandered the trails of Whittier Narrows Recreation Area and were greeted by thousands of jack-o’-lanterns that were hand-carved according to different themes. The themes included dinosaurs, music, film, marine life, sports, and much, much more. There was even a wintery Halloween section completely with flurries of snow that drifted above our heads.

The dense rolling fog and multitudes of illuminated jack-o’-lanterns created a festive Halloween atmosphere to be enjoyed by all ages, especially those too young for events like Knott’s Scary Farm. Far from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns is a great way to spend a relaxing October evening enjoying the sights and scents of Halloween season without the intensity and suspense that most of these events bring.
