review: Bob Baker Marionette Theatre Presents Hallowe’en Spooktacular
REVIEW: One of the most magical places that exists for Southern California entertainment is the Bob Baker Marionette Theater. This transformative marionette company has been around for decades and has had a massive impact on Los Angeles arts and culture, along with influencing hundreds of puppeteers from around the world. The Bob Baker Marionette Theater might be best known for their seasonal show that brings their spookiest of puppets to life every fall: the Hallowe’en Spooktacular.
This lively show feels like a psychedelic trip back in time as hand puppets and marionettes come to life to celebrate Halloween. You will see UFOs, Dracula and Vampira, Young Frankenstein and the monster tap dancing and singing to “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, children trick-or-treating, and even a sassy black cat! The Spooktacular ends with its tradition of ice cream snacks and puppet photo ops for the children. This show, and its vintage soundtrack and bejeweled lighting, evolves every year thanks to the team’s creativity and innovation, the talented puppeteers, and the loving restoration of puppets and stage sets.
Bob Baker's dream, which was threatened for years through strained funding and an eviction from the theater’s original location, seems to be stronger than ever. The team behind the new space has obviously put a lot of work into building a strong foundation for current and future generations of both children and adults to enjoy this unique experience. As we watch the Bob Baker Marionette Theater evolve and grow, it feels like a celebration at the heart of what art can be: bringing to life a world that at one time was only imagined.
