review: hellsir presents purge night 2020
As we pulled off the highway into a random and quiet residential area of Rancho Cucamonga, we weren’t sure what to expect. Hellsir didn’t add their name to the SoCal Haunt list and they were very vocal about their display being a last-minute decision. As we parked our car and heard the loud sounds of dubstep, sirens, and static resonating from the distance - we knew this was going to be interesting. We had made it to Purge Night 2020.
This yard display, in tribute to The Purge, was nothing short of impressive. The display was centered around the handcrafted “Hellsir’s Deli & Liquors” flat - which looked like it was engulfed in flames. This impressive fire effect was achieved through the use of projected flames made of light and real smoke shooting over the street out of the storefront’s charred rooftop. The facade looked extremely realistic thanks to meticulous details that included neon beer signs glowing in the windows and encompassing graffiti. Surrounding Hellsir’s stood a machine gun-toting Uncle Sam and various other masked vandals. Nearby loomed the gruesome “Carnival of Flesh” where men were being decapitated by a guillotine. Empty beer bottles and debris covered the ground as Lady Liberty grinned into the darkness.
This amount of detail and care that Hellsir put into their haunt this year cannot be praised enough as their display easily rivals any of the Purge displays we have seen at past Horror Nights. Hellsir’s Purge Night 2020 is a great gift this season, especially during a time in which Halloween entertainment is scarce. We highly encourage people to make the trek to Rancho Cucamonga from Los Angeles to enjoy something from the brighter side of 2020.
