Review: planet of the apes

Every season we try our best to find new haunts that are off the radar. This past weekend we were thrilled to discover a new Halloween attraction in Long Beach: a yard display paying tribute to the 1968 film, Planet of the Apes. The artistic detail and size of this haunt was impressive and a truly enjoyable way to close our 2020 haunt season.

Created by Heather Pens, a zookeeper by day, this yard display explores the world of the famous film franchise in which apes have evolved into human-like creatures. The most astonishing part of this display was the giant Statue of Liberty head rising out of the home’s roof. This massive prop, custom-made for this display, overlooks the front yard in which apes are observing the approaching skeletons of humans. The costumes of the characters are meticulously crafted with special attention paid to details. There is even a motion activated ape that jumps up if you get too close to the cage holding the skeleton of ANSA astronaut Colonel George Taylor (the tattered remains of his uniform display a replica of his i.d. badge and ANSA patch).

Pens’s tribute to Planet of the Apes was one of the most surprising discoveries of this season. We were even more thrilled when she told us that she makes collectible pins for each new haunt she creates. She even gave us some as a gift! Pens completely changes her yard display every year, giving further testament to her boundless creativity. She already has plans for her 2021 display, and we are greatly looking forward to visiting her new creations next Halloween.
