review: neverland nightmares
When someone is so creative that their yard display has to become a year-long plan - we can’t help but go out of our way to experience what they have created for their neighborhood. One of these homes, located in Long Beach, is Heather Pen’s “Neverland Nightmares”: her own particular take on the story of Peter Pan. This yard display is completely captivating to see in person and is a great example of how people can showcase their creativity and imagination during the Halloween season.
While most people make literal versions of their tribute displays, Pen has opted for her own, unique interpretation. Instead of the Darling family, we see skeletal remains. Captain Hook overlooks the sea as Peter Pan flies down from the sky (accomplished by invisible wires holding him from the curb’s tree). There is a teepee where you can either observe its interior or watch a shadow puppet show - depending on which angle you are viewing from. Our favorite part of the yard display was the skeletal, illuminated Tinker Bell who mechanically flies above thanks to an invisible wire. She only flies by every few minutes, so it’s a very surprising detail when you notice her.
The entire yard display is loomed over by a massive alligator who is strapped to the roof of the home and who is almost as big as the structure itself. All of the rooftop art pieces are custom built by Pen every year, and yet another feature that makes her home display so special. Because Pen switches her theme each year (last year it was Planet of the Apes), she makes commemorative pins for each season and they are usually only available on Halloween night.
While Heather Pen works as a zookeeper by day, her creativity and technical talents shine at night every Halloween season. Neverland Nightmares is a testament of how the holidays can bring out the best in people's talents - offering a chance to share artistic creations with the community. If you find yourself haunting in Long Beach, please stop by this very enjoyable yard display which is only a short drive from Fairbrook Manor.
