review: grimwood hollow
Grimwood Hollow is a mysterious, secret yard display that brings you deep into a hidden forest where infernal pumpkin imps grow - only to be harvested by demonic goblins who collect them for a witch’s brew. This world is hidden within a modest backyard in Burbank, and within it reside dark mysteries and ghoulish entities.
Created by Nichol and Steve Cotroneo (the latter being a Disney Imagineer by day), Grimwood Hollow is inhabited by completely original characters and adorned with methodical details that make this haunt one of the best Halloween yard displays that we have ever witnessed. Once you check in with your reservation, you follow a small and winding path through a graveyard and haunted forest filled with beautiful and chilling features like animatronic characters and mechanized effects. There are mischievous pumpkin creatures that come to life and tombstones that pay tribute to fantasy and horror film icons. The perfect lighting of deep blues and macabre reds complement the creeping fog and create an extremely breathtaking and theme park-level experience.
Our favorite features of Grimwood Hollow are definitely Cotroneo's handmade goblin-like characters. The newest creature is an animatronic, multi-eyed demonic goblin who is methodically decapitating mini pumpkin creatures with a pair of scissors encrusted with pumpkin guts and seeds. He is handing them over to the animatronic swamp witch who is hunched over her cauldron of bubbling neon green brew that she stirs menacingly. On the ground, at the foot of her cauldron, are various magical potions for her stew and a very large, croaking toad. Further down the forest pathway is the undead witch, Rowan Morrison, who is eagerly awaiting her next victim.
Grimwood Hollow is a cinematic experience that incorporates elements of dark fantasy and horror in order to create a world that is incredibly original and on par with the creativity and dark humor of Jim Henson mixed with Bernie Wrightson. We feel extremely fortunate to have had the honor of visiting Grimwood Hollow this season, especially considering that the RSVP list sold out immediately. Those of us who were lucky enough to get a reservation were very fortunate indeed. For those who didn’t make it, we hope you can enjoy the photos, give Grimwood Hollow a follow, and don’t miss out on their display in 2022.
