review: fear farm
Just north of the San Gabriel mountains, in the Victor Valley of the Mojave Desert, lies one of the greatest home haunts of the season: Fear Farm. This massive haunted attraction takes place in the front yard of a residence in the town of Phelan and contains multiple Halloween attractions that would make Knott’s Scary Farm proud. During your time at Fear Farm you can enjoy a hayride, two haunted houses, a bar, and a ghost town. This home haunt attraction is completely cohesive in theming, filled with scare actors and marvelously detailed features including superbly crafted sets, synchronized fog, and beautifully eerie lighting.
Fear Farm contains two mazes. One is a fun, Western-themed walkthrough with numerous characters, like undertakers and victorian ghosts, amid an impressive array of caskets. The main maze, which is within an old, dilapidated Victorian house, is filled with amazing illusions and tricks that are both entertaining and memorable. At one point we were in the kitchen with seemingly no way out until a character let us escape through a refrigerator. An even more impressive illusion took place in the opening room where we found ourselves in a laser swamp. The swamp was created through the use of green lights, fog, and a descending ramp that gave the feeling of sinking deeper into the abyss. A scare actor remained seated in a chair, staring at us as we descended into the swamp. This character then stood up and was walking on the “surface” of the swamp, a trick achieved through the use of stilts. This calibre of illusion was a very original effect and unique to the brand of Fear Farm.
Though we love their mazes, the true heart of Fear Farm is the haunted hayride. When we first visited this attraction years ago, it was a modest hayride that drove visitors around the property - running into various illusions and magic tricks (like sawing someone in half or running over someone buried underground). The hayride has since come a long way, evolving into an attraction that contains numerous incredibly crafted sets, real horses, and a life-size spaceship. The haunted hayride, like other features of this haunt, is an experience unique to Fear Farm.
We greatly enjoyed our visit to this year's incarnation of Fear Farm. If this season proves anything, it’s that this haunt just keeps getting better and better - growing in size and breadth. As this epic home haunt continues to grow we look forward to seeing what comes next. For LA people: you can easily pair Fear Farm with All Saints Lunatic Asylum and High Desert Haunt for a thoroughly entertaining and creepy night out.
