review: ALBERT REYES HAUNTED HOUSE
Every Halloween you can hear blood curdling screams echo throughout El Sereno. These horrific sounds originate from the home of local artist, Albert Reyes, who hosts a haunted house in the backyard of his home. This maze is unlisted (known through word of mouth), only open for Halloween night, and by invite only. This haunt remains one of the most suspenseful that we have ever visited. Its recycled wood structures mixed with retro futuristic storefronts feel like a cross between Blade Runner and Friday the 13th.
This maze changes with every season since Reyes works on it year-round. This year its path was extremely tight and at times borderline claustrophobic. The aged wood hallway walls were dimly lit and decorated with various props and art created by Reyes himself. Throughout the maze, multiple radios were tuned to the faint static of Mexican AM radio stations. The maze's scare actors were excellent, and successfully gave us frights from dark, secret areas - which added to the tension of this unique haunt.
The most intriguing parts of this maze were the strange “storefront” displays that Reyes has built and embellished with monsters and various art pieces. They can be seen around corners and often reappear to reveal new haunting details from different points of view, altogether creating a retro futuristic world of horrors.
Albert Reyes’ maze is a living work of art and a testament to his endless talent. We are so grateful to experience this maze every season and look forward to seeing what new art Reyes will create for next Halloween.
