review: ZOMBIE JOE’S URBAN DEATH

Located in an unassuming small storefront off of Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood, Zombie Joe's Underground Theater has been hosting bizarre and innovative performances for quite a while now. Every Halloween they present Urban Death, a hybrid maze/performance that explores the darker aspects of horror. With its reputation as one of the most unique haunt experiences in the area, Urban Death has become a Halloween cult classic.

Entering through a dark, tarped maze where all you have to light your way is a flashlight - you will run into acts of sex and violence provided by the evening's actors - making every turn an encounter with horror. Once in the back of the building you will be treated to a series of short and sinister vignettes where you will see penises being bitten off, masturbation acts, and demonic men floating on the wall. At the performance's conclusion you are handed a light as you make your way through the maze you initially entered, now populated with a new series of characters hidden in the corners as you eventually exit.

While the layout of Urban Death remains the same, your experience will never repeat itself. Their use of a limited amount of space is always astounding beyond words as their ever evolving cast always finds new ways to make the most out of it. This is a haunt event unlike anything else in the area, possibly the world, and is always worth attending.
