REVIEW: ZOMBIE JOE’s URBAN DEATH
For every season of Urban Death we have seen Zombie Joe’s Underground convert its performance space into a maze and theater show that is both extreme and unpredictable. Year after year the show features themes of terror-infused dark humor that explore the darker side of humanity, leaving audiences as equally unsettled as they are entertained. As the theater group’s hype has exponentially increased, so have the swarms of audiences who huddle together for an evening of morbid curiosity and dark humor.
This year Urban Death is slightly less macabre and more focused on the more strange and unusual. This doesn’t mean you will miss out on the nudity or violence. While these themes are still very present, there are more comedic moments interlaced between the floating evil witches and the disappearing ax-wielding maniac.
For the more squeamish adults and younger crowds, there will be limited early evening offerings of Zombie Joe’s all ages production: “Urban Death for Kidz”. Starting earlier this season, the Kidz show is a PG version that offers tales of tooth fairies and toys instead of naked body parts and killings.
Urban Death is a must-attend event for anyone searching for a more unique and gruesome version of traditional haunt mazes. The intermittent theater vignettes mixed with droning synth sounds and minimal lighting make this Halloween experience truly unique and always riveting.
