REVIEW: Wildwood’s Ghostly Saloon
A few years ago we discovered Wildwood’s Ghostly Saloon through our friend and peer Albert (@hauntphotobloggraphy). At the time, the maze was not listed and did not have any socials - instead relying completely on word of mouth. Since then, this haunt located in Newhall has become a must-visit attraction for us every season.
Since our first visit we have seen this Western-themed maze evolve through the years into a very developed walkthrough full of tricks, illusions, and top-notch acting. For this season they teamed up with a friend from Universal Studios who helped them add new additions to their set-up. The most notable addition was a well where you could pull the rope and hear someone below yelling up at you. This cool detail was a nod to the Disneyland Indiana Jones well that wasn't even noticed by most of the people we saw waiting in line. Once inside there was a new trick where a miner came out of a cave and helped you set off an explosion via a detonator. As smoke begins to spew towards you, a light travels along the detonation line - a nod to Disney's Big Thunder Mountain. As you exit you enter a bar where a ghost plays a tune - their instruments floating mechanically - as a silent bar patron sits quietly reading a book. Her presence feels menacing without her ever even acknowledging the bar's guests.
This dimly lit, fog immersed haunt saturated in blue hues is such a joy to attend every season. The team behind Wildwood’s Ghostly Saloon has expanded every year since we attended, going to new and unforeseen heights of creativity. We expect that we will continue to see them arc into unexpected terrain for many more years to come.
