review: WILDWOOD’S GHOSTLY SALOON

A great find for haunters can happen on those nights where you have a jam-packed schedule of amazing destinations and then you get a tip about an unlisted maze that is open late. This happened to us last year as we were leaving Santa Clarita's Pumpkin Jacks and ran into one of our favorite haunt archivists, Albert Lam. He told us about a mysterious maze in Newhall that we had to go see. Luckily we took his advice and squeezed in a visit to Wildwood's on our way back down to LA - and we were absolutely mesmerized by what we experienced.

It would be safe to say that Wildwood's strength is in developing an environment that really makes you feel like you are pulled back in time. Their Western ghost town is filled with skeletons, antiques, and aged wooden embellishments at every turn. While last year's haunt was a long and quiet journey through a frontier town, this year the Wildwood team decided to build a “Ghostly Saloon” for their 2023 maze. This maze is absolutely incredible and incorporates scare actors for the first time.

The story goes that every year the Saloon is visited by ghosts of its past, however they have become rowdy and therefore you have to enter through the back door. As you walk the path around the saloon you are illuminated by the maze's trademark blue lighting while you run into the ghosts who lurk in the shadows - including a slowly moving Victorian woman. There is even a mechanical casket emanating fog. 

Inside of the saloon you meet a drunken cowboy. As music fills the room he interacts with you until eventually he sits down for a drink at the bar. Once he does you notice that there is a ghost band playing behind the bar. As their instruments floated around he exclaimed to us, "Oh wow, you can see them too!".

Wildwood's is a great addition to the legacy of the incredible mazes that have come and gone in the Santa Clarita region. We can't emphasize enough how well done this maze is and hope you can find time to visit during this busy Halloween weekend.
