review: WAYNE WHITE’S CAP’N STABBY

The artistic career of Wayne White has been a huge influence in most of lives. Whether it's his set designs and puppets for Pee-wee's Playhouse, his 2D puppet animations for the Smashing Pumpkins’ "Tonight, Tonight" music video, his music video work for Future Islands, his art exhibits, his giant puppets - he has always delivered absolutely transformative work that leaves an impression on anyone who experiences it. Adding to his long list of artistic accomplishments, White has for the past few haunt seasons presented his neighborhood with his pirate character “Cap'n Stabby” - a massive, possibly dead pirate overlooking the streets of Los Angeles.

Evolving through the years from his giant handmade puppet heads that were made popular during the release of the documentary on his artistic journey - “Beauty is Embarrassing” - Cap'n Stabby has come a long way. Originally a vintage 1920's gentleman, he was worked on by White to eventually grow a little more rugged until landing with his trademark pirate countenance. Eventually the piece evolved into its current incarnation - a pirate’s head with a cutlass shoved through it, resulting in a confused and woebegone expression that is accentuated by his dangling eyeball.

To protect White and his family's privacy, we won't share the address of this incredible work of art. However, we wanted to share the photos of this unique piece of LA art that brings joy to its community. White is an artist who is constantly producing work, and we are thankful that every year he takes the time to offer his neighborhood this incredible Hallowen treat. This is also a reminder to stop and enjoy the art that our neighbors offer during this season filled with creativity and innovation.
