REVIEW: THE TIME MACHINE (1960)

We really go out of our way to find truly unique attractions that have not been covered. Years ago a Long Beach friend informed us that their neighbor had been creating gigantic customized inflatables that would sit atop the roof of their house, acting as a beacon for their yearly Halloween yard display. Our interest was instantly piqued so we hopped in the car and headed south from LA to see it for ourselves.

Created by zookeeper Heather Pens, this display brings to life some of her favorite films every season with her famous customized inflatables and scenes that employ action-packed skeletons and rigged illusions. This Halloween brings us the 1960 film The Time Machine. While this may be a somewhat unexplored film to base a haunt on, Pens took pride in the idea and said she has no interest in ever making a display from something that is expected. This makes sense as she has done a haunted Peter Pan, The NeverEnding Story, and Planet of the Apes in recent years.

Centered around her massive inflatable, which is anchored on top of her home, the display has multiple scenes recreating the movie in her yard. There is a well with a Morlock crawling out in a thick fog (created by making vapor from a water mister submerged in a fish tank). There is also a window display featuring a woman going through time as her outfit changes with every era. The time machine itself is built from a reclaimed table and chairs and a foam body roller!

The Time Machine (1960) is an incredible testament to the talent that surrounds us. While Pens is training birds at the zoo by day, by night she is coming home and creating works of wonder. Her imagination and ingenuity is unprecedented in the world of yard displays and we can't wait to see what cinematic masterpiece she brings us in 2025!
