REVIEW: The Haunted Rose presents "Krampusnacht"
As we began writing this we realized that when we attended December's "Krampusnacht” (Krampus Night), by Whittier's legendary haunt The Haunted Rose, that it would sadly be our last maze visit of the year. As we look back on the massive amounts of talent we have seen displayed throughout the past few months, it has all felt like a cinematic blur of creativity, ingenuity, and devotion to the Halloween spirit .
We are huge fans of The Haunted Rose, and we are happy to report that what we experienced was both exhilarating and inspiring - providing a fitting end to another year of incredible haunts. As we approached the one-night-only outdoor maze, illuminated by the massive winter moon, we knew we were in for a real treat. Screams and bell peals reverberated throughout the night air on what otherwise would be just another quiet December evening in the suburbs.
The maze wrapped around the front yard of The Haunted Rose's home with its exterior consisting of a cemetery with holiday decor and filled with skulls and tombstones soaked in blood red and sapphire blue hues. A ghoulish groundskeeper overlooked guests as they walked up to the entrance, where they were greeted by a possibly drunk Santa Claus. Santa was also busy physically fighting the Krampusse, throwing them back inside the maze as they hunted the children surrounding the structure.
Once inside the maze we entered into a world of madness, where ghostly ballet characters danced as demonic elves hunted those brave enough to enter. The tomb-filled maze was dimly lit by candlelight, and featured ghostly Santa displays, skeletons, frightening monsters, and the namesake of the attraction - Krampus himself.
We love The Haunted Rose and all of the magical and ghoulish storytelling they continue to bring to life. They are a Southern California legacy haunt that incredibly changes themes every year and consistently evolves and grows. With "Krampus Night", The Haunted Rose brought a much needed healthy dose of home haunting to round out everyone's year. And with that our account will once again, like the talented people we cover, go dark until the next season. We wish everyone a wonderful 2025 and look forward to seeing and archiving the awe-inspiring work all of these builders bring next year!
