review: the curse of the treasure
Throughout history, pirates have been some of the most inspiring villains for a variety of media ranging from books to plays to songs. In more recent history, we have enjoyed pirates in film thanks to epic sagas like Pirates of the Caribbean and cult classics like The Goonies. The search for hidden treasure, battles with the undead, and constant lawlessness are all classic elements of exciting storytelling. We were therefore very eager to visit “The Curse of the Treasure”, a wonderful pirate-themed haunt in Santa Clarita.
Tucked within a two-car garage is a world in which pirates comes to life. The darkened lights, motion triggers, and wood pallet construction all come together to create an environment that is suspenseful and spine-chilling throughout the entire maze. The scares were executed with great precision, as when the lights shut off and briefly turned back on to reveal a pirate who then disappeared. You will encounter numerous characters who slide past you in cramped quarters as you hear prisoners scream for your help.
We were very impressed when we learned that The Curse of the Treasure was built by one person, 18-year-old Cameron McGuiness. Not only did McGuiness successfully create a professional haunt at a very young age, he also built the haunt all on his own!
The Curse of the Treasure is an impressive maze that will transport you to a world filled with adventure and horror. Cameron McGuiness is hugely talented and we look forward to the tricks and treats he will reveal in future haunt seasons.
