REVIEW: THE 13TH GATE ASYLUM PRESENTS UNFORESEEN

After creating one of 2018’s best mazes, Voodoo on the Bayou, Simi Valley’s 13th Gate Asylum is back and ready to bring your nightmares to life. With this year’s maze, Unforeseen, they have filled up a massive 15,000 square foot warehouse in Oxnard with all kinds of horrors. Within these walls is a wildly varied assortment of characters and sets, keeping all who dare visit on edge at the turn of every corner...making each encounter truly unforeseen.

Last year’s Voodoo on the Bayou was thematically cohesive, with each part of the maze delving deeper into a chilling tale of dark magic set amid marshy swamps. This year’s maze, Unforeseen, offers many different vignettes, each with their own hidden story. From possessed clowns to a discombobulated man following you through a popcorn littered screening room, you will be hounded by the bizarre and supernatural characters that exist within the 13th Gate Asylum universe. We were delighted to once again encounter 13th Gate Asylum’s signature fright: a life-size train that howls and barrels towards unsuspecting visitors. We also greatly enjoyed the customized Victorian horse-drawn hearse, which spewed forth horrifying demons. Our favorite room was the “Rain Room”, which simulated a beautiful and suspenseful thunderstorm.

Unforeseen is a classic dark maze which showcases the talent and years of experience oozing from the 13th Gate Asylum team. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through 15 years of dedication and artistry in the world of DIY haunts.
