REVIEW: Textile Laboratory of Horror

As the Halloween season was ending, we were looking for some last minute haunts to attend last night. To our surprise, we stumbled across “Textile Laboratory of Horror”, a haunted house collaboration between Brain Dead Studios (a venue we have actually worked shows at) and Converse for the release of a new shoe. Located in Silverlake, this haunt exceeded our expectations in its design and layout - creating a very original and entertaining experience.

The construction of this maze, located in a basement space off Sunset Blvd, began this past Monday and was complete and ready to open by Thursday. The haunt is a collaboration between Kyle Lesser & Ray Schmidt, who together have transformed a tight, subterranean space into a mind-boggling laboratory where aliens have escaped and medical specimens have come to life. The retrofuturist sets are reminiscent of Tomorrow Land and inhabited by enthusiastic scare actors and two sets of amazing, large scale puppet props built by Eris Deo (of "I Think you Should Leave") and Joe Holiday (of "The Eric Andre Show").

Truly a highlight were was how the maze incorporated puppetry creatively into the environment. One puppet, which we initially assumed was animatronic, is a large scale, mutated rat escaping from its cage and attempting to bite guests as they walk past. This puppet is actually hand-operated by a puppeteer and was reactive to the light and sound triggers within the room. The second group of puppets who were mutated creatures hanging behind a broken wall. Their eyes, mouths, and limbs slowly moved and stared at guests as they walked by - both disturbing and unbelievable to witness.

The Textile Laboratory of Horror is a great treat for anyone out last-minute haunting. This is an absolutely incredible and unique maze and we hope that people can experience its otherworldly frights tonight. It is free and open from 7 - 10 pm.
