REVIEW: Terror in Train Town
The Southern California Railway Museum (SCRM) was established in 1956 by an enthusiastic group of teenagers who wanted to preserve their local railroad history. The museum offers free admission for people of all ages in order to encourage visitors to learn about an often overlooked chapter of Southern California’s history. The SCRM holds a vast collection of railway vehicles, including everything from hand-painted trains that once ran in the yard of legendary Disney animator Ward Kimball, to the only remaining street railway funeral car, the Descanso. The grounds of this museum are a trip back in time and therefore the perfect place to host “Terror in Train Town”.
Set amid aged barns and eerie street lighting, Terror in Train Town contains two mazes: “Darkness” and “Hyde Street Haunted House”. The creators behind these mazes are the Bloodshed Brothers - twins who share a love of the macabre and have worked on epic haunts including Lake Elsinore’s Field of Screams.
Darkness is a pitch-black maze in which you can’t see anything, and therefore its name offers the perfect description of what you will experience. It is reminiscent of Rob Zombie’s 2013 maze, “Lords of Salem Total Blackout”, as you have no choice but to feel your way through a maze that is sporadically lit by taser sparks and strobe lights.
Hyde Street Haunted House is an incredibly crafted maze that imbues you with a sense of beautiful decay and nostalgia through decor that includes rotting church organs, vintage Halloween toys, and decomposing clothes. Throughout this suspenseful maze you will encounter playful characters who are often hidden until the last moment. These characters become even more meaningful when you find out they are all played by friends and family, including the Bloodshed Brothers’s mom who portrays an amazing psychotic chef. Our favorite room was a retro 1980's living room with hundreds of vintage jack-o’-lantern candy buckets and dozens of classic hanging ghosts that vibrated and played Halloween music.
The Bloodshed Brothers have created an extremely enjoyable experience in this very special location. You will have an incredibly fun night out at Terror in Train Town and support the work of the Brothers and the remarkable train museum. Terror in Train Town can be paired up with Field of Screams if you are visiting Lake Elsinore this Halloween weekend.
