REVIEW: Steamtown Gotham
Halloween can be the perfect opportunity for creative expression. As we’ve said many times, Halloween is the perfect time to bring artistic visions to life. People work tirelessly to build haunt structures and props for months, and even years. These creations can be ephemeral, existing only for a few weeks, until they are either destroyed or altered for the next season. If we’re lucky, we can witness the expansion of a haunt with each new season. A great example of this is the ever-evolving yard display, Steamtown Gotham.
Years ago, Eddie Pizzuto was working at a golf course when he requested to have time off for Halloween. When his boss asked why, Pizzuto pulled out his phone to share photos of his yard display. His boss was very impressed and asked Pizzuto why he wasn’t working full-time doing creative work. This prompted Pizzuto to quit his job and dedicate himself fully to working in creative fields.
Steamtown Gotham is Pizzuto’s own twist on the world of Batman. This display is a mini-town that contains Arkham Asylum, the Ace Chemicals factory, Gotham Garage, and the Joker’s Depot. As you enter the mini-maze into Gotham you will come across a vat filled with steaming green chemicals that has the Joker trapped inside. This is indicated by the Joker’s hand floating in the vat’s window as you hear him cackling. The surrounding structures are lit by flashes of light as the sounds of rolling thunder are heard. A looming town clock is running as the bat signal is projected into the clouds.
Steamtown Gotham is a beautiful Batman tribute that showcases Pizzuto’s love for the legendary DC character. This intricately built yard display contains a collection of wonderful visuals and interactive elements, making it both a work of art and an impressive tribute to the creations of Bob Kane.
