REVIEW: Rotten Apple 907 presents: Death Triangle

If there was one example of a seasoned haunt family who has been the single most consistent source of inspiration for other haunters, we’d have to say that the Preston family and their masterpiece, Rotten Apple 907, would be it. This yearly haunt has been going for nearly two decades, bringing new themes each year and always fundraising for charity. Multiple haunts have cited the Prestons as who they look to for advice. Therefore, Rotten Apple 907 is more than just a haunted maze, it is a legacy that grows every year both as a creative endeavour and as a haunt community enhancer.

This year’s maze is “The Death Triangle”, an exploration into a fantastic, oceanic world in which ships and planes mysteriously disappear. The maze, built within the space of a front yard, has a seaworn exterior decorated with hanging anchors and topped off with a wrecked plane which reflects the ocean’s waves (this year they had lighting help from Ghost Train/ Midsummer Scream’s Gary Baker). The view of this exterior alone would be satisfying enough, however what lies waiting inside is truly impressive.

The maze is filled with drowned sailors, swimming sharks, lifesize puppetry, and Lovecraftian creatures. It incorporates some classic illusions, such as slanted floors to make you feel unbalanced, that are reminiscent of Santa Cruz’s legendary Mystery Spot. In addition, there are hydraulic powered shakes, amazing props, and a superb sound and lighting design which altogether create a life-like world of nautical surrealism. We don’t want to give too much away and therefore encourage you to pay attention to the small details, like the beach sand which covers the floor!

Rotten Apple 907 is one of the most beautiful, charming, and breathtaking haunts you will experience. The Meyers are continuously enthusiastic year after year, and their love and dedication to the world of haunts is joyfully contagious. Their incredible talent is only outdone by their unpretentiousness and altruism. Rotten Apple 907 is always free - however contributions to their favorite charity, the Volunteers of Burbank Animal Shelter, are greatly appreciated
