review: REICHLAND ASYLUM

There are always those haunts that you know will be worth making the long drive, sometimes for hours, to visit. For example, there are our favorites in Apple Valley (All Saints, Fear Farm, and Jordan's High Desert Haunt). The reason we keep driving out every year to Apple Valley is for the guarantee of consistent thrills and entertainment. Another notable maze that we make a great effort to visit is the one and only Reichland Asylum located in Riverside. This maze holds a special place in our hearts because they have continually maintained their status as one of the best DIY haunt attractions in Southern California.

First off, the immense exterior display of what looks like an actual asylum is terrifying. As you await to enter you are towered over by a multi-story flat complete with smoke, a surrounding cemetery, and an asylum patient staring out of a second story window. As impressive as this is, it’s nothing compared to the characters, rooms, and chaos that exist inside.

Reichland Asylum is inhabited by incredible scare actors led by a horrifying character named "Matthias", who welcomes you as soon as you enter. He stares you directly in the eyes and tells the story of Sarah Crawford - a dark personality who has taken over. This scene is so wonderfully acted and further intensified by Matthias’s rotten teeth and ragged clothing.

As you make your twist and turns through the Asylum you encounter demonic characters amongst old cars, used caskets, and body parts. The new edition this year is actually having an encounter with the infamous demonic Sarah Crawford. She pops out and intimidatingly makes you say her name before leaving. This finale is wonderful and proves once again that Reichland Asylum is one of the best haunts to ever exist.
