REVIEW: Pumkin Jack’s Haunted House
It is sometimes very astonishing what someone can do within the space of a garage. In the suburbs of Los Angeles, most people turn their garages into workshops, mancaves, or storage areas. However, Pumkin Jack’s Haunted House has transformed their modest two-car garage into an incredible haunt that has been entertaining their local community for years. Last year we loved their unofficial Stranger Things maze. And while this year there isn’t an ax-swinging Winona Ryder, there are plenty of knife-wielding Michael Myers around every corner as Pumkin Jack’s has reinvented itself with a tribute to John Carpenter’s classic film, Halloween.
The maze is filled with pop-up scares that are complemented by the blood-soaked set design and shadowy lighting. The actors are excellent and very successful in their scare tactics. There were many memorable moments including a bloody kitchen and a bedroom murder scene; however our favorite experience was a completely new haunt trick (which we’ve never seen before): a pop-up staircase. This creation pulled off the perfect scare as Michael Myers appears below the staircase in attempts to stab anyone brave enough to walk past him. This very clever and very original mechanism fit right in with the maze’s truly unique and distinctive nature. As we left the maze and walked by the spectacularly constructed spooky porch facade, we were in awe of what Pumkin Jack’s has been able to achieve through its unique twists on favorite horror/sci-fi films and tv shows. Characterized by original creations and perfectly executed scares, Pumkin Jack’s is always enjoyable and a mandatory visit on anyone’s haunt list. This spectacular maze is in good company with its fellow local haunts - Shiver, Beware the Dark Realm, and Club Fear.
