REVIEW: Pumkin Jack’s presents "Jungle Curse"
Santa Clarita's Pumkin Jack’s is a home haunt that for a very long time has been creating excellently crafted mazes loosely themed from IP's that they love. Whether it is Stranger Things or the film Halloween - they have their own way of taking something they love and twisting it completely into their own version. All of this is done by transforming their garage (and often their laundry room!) into a multi-room maze that is often an extremely high energy and exhilarating experience for guests.
This year they chose to do their own take on Disneyland's water-based ride, The Jungle Cruise, which they aptly titled "Jungle Curse". Their trademark complex and giant maze exterior featured skeleton cast members in safari hats, with one skeleton sitting in a Jungle Cruise boat. All of this was set to a blasting soundtrack of Billie Eilish songs which could be heard throughout their festive and high energy neighborhood (which has dozens of incredible displays).
Once inside the maze you are reacquainted with the notorious world of Pumkin Jack’s. You enter into an expedition headquarters where you are presented with a choice between two doors. These choices will inevitably lead you into contact with seemingly possessed entities who spookily interact with you. Eventually the path leads you to a cold, tight maze that is in total darkness. While panic sets in, all you can hear are chainsaws and scare actors hitting the thin wooden walls. When you finally reach an exit you can see a wall in which someone has possibly busted through it in the style of the Kool-Aid man. As you examine the wall, a man in a mask wielding a chainsaw chases you out of the maze.
Pumkin Jacks is all about reinterpreting popular, identifiable brand names into their own twisted and high energy atmosphere. This year is no exception. Though they were only open for only two nights (10/26 and 10/31) this season, they still took great efforts to create an impressive and highly crafted neighborhood haunt. In our opinion, that is what the magic of this season is all about - people bringing their impossible ideas to life even if it's only merely for a few hours - only to inevitably be destroyed forever and rebuilt as something new in the next season!
