REVIEW: nightmare in whiting woods

There's a grip of mythological haunts that only pop up for one night a season. These haunts - often vaguely covered and not listed on resources like the SoCal Haunt List - become rumored murmurs within the handful of people who really dig deeply into the world of home haunts. One of these haunts, Glendale's Nightmare in Whiting Woods, has somehow stayed off of most people’s radars yet is still incredibly well-attended. The lines usually go on for two hours or more late into Halloween night - the one day it is open every season.

We have been going to Nightmare in Whiting Woods long before we began documenting haunts, and have always been impressed with their ability to change themes every season. While the route often remains the same (you enter through the front, go through an interior section, into a graveyard, and through a side hall into a driveway exit) it does change significantly with each season's build. This year's theme was a zombie, biker bar gone awry. As the stressed out, gun-wielding bartender at the entrance panics he sends you through the establishment's bathroom and into the back area where multiple Hell Angels zombies come towards you. This spits you out into a graveyard full of piles of trash - which zombies also come out of - as an evangelical child screams "Repent!" while holding up signs that reflect his sentiment. As we exited through the final hallway - an underground sewer - we saw a lonely chainsaw lying unattended - meaning we probably went through too late to see the usual final boss of this seasons haunt.

We were surprised we were able to make it to this haunt on time as we began Halloween near Ventura, then went to Pasadena and La Crescenta, and ended the haunt night in Glendale. Nightmare in Whiting Woods, whose queue is often as chaotic as the haunt itself, is deep within SoCal haunt lore and infamous for its original builds every single season. Their haunted biker bar is a theme we have not yet seen, and their take was an original and challenging way to build a maze - all of this to only be open for around six hours on Halloween!
