review: THE NEVERENDING STORY

Down in Long Beach there is a woman named Heather Pen. By day she works with large birds as a trainer and caretaker, however we know her for what she does by night every Halloween - which is custom building extremely large inflatable structures based on her favorite movies. Every season her home becomes a massive, larger than life film tribute and this year's display, The Neverending Story, is no exception!

From a block away we could see the head of Rock Biter/Pyornkrachzark, the massive, lovable rock chewing character from the film. This inflatable is over 26 feet tall and dwarfs the surrounding homes. He is gently overlooking scenes from the film which include inflatable versions of Falcor and the Racing Snail while Artax, Atreyu's best friend, is drowning in the Swamp of Sadness. Above floats the Bat and Night Hob who frequently pass by Engywook - all of which are controlled via installed line and mini motors. This year also brings an expansion to Heather's layout as she now uses her closet windows to display characters as well. Behind Falcor sits Bastian Bux, reading The Neverending Story, overlooking the fantasy world told by the book.

Pen's Neverending Story is a truly wonderful work of art. Her choice of film is something you'd never see in another yard display. The towering characters and film's theme blasting into the night air attract visitors from far and wide to journey back to their childhood and enter the magical land of Fantasia.
