REVIEW: Monsters of Mayhem
As they approach a decade of building haunts, Riverside’s Coble Haunter decided this year to delve into making their first dark ride. This original ride, entitled “Monsters of Mayhem”, is contained inside a beautifully rendered castle wall facade, complete with moving sideshow lights. Inside the haunt you will board a handcrafted cart that takes you along a track as you encounter various classic horror monsters (Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula, and The Wolfman), while motion triggers activate moving coffins and light explosions.
Through intense research, Coble Haunter taught themselves how to make track and push carts. These carts are beautifully hand-painted and numbered; and they run smoothly along the tracks of the maze. These details are reminiscent of classic ghost rides which were hugely popular when amusement parks like Coney Island reigned supreme. Monsters of Mayhem also contains nods to Disney classic rides, such as the explosion scene which is a wink to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Coble Haunter has even created a Disney inspired control board complete with video cameras, emergency buttons, and a track map.
As we left the final section of the ride - one in which an impressive, lit up control board was going haywire as it electrified the mad scientist's creations - we were in absolute awe. Monsters of Mayhem stands out on its own as a rare and incredible DIY attraction. Coble Haunter’s dedication to bringing to life their passion project transcends all expectations. Admission to this ride is free, and the magic you experience in Monsters of Mayhem will take you back in time to both the golden age of horror and to an era when haunts were experienced in the dark tunnels of amusement parks.
