review: KNOTT’s SCARY Farm
There isn’t much to say about Knott’s Scary Farm that hasn’t been said already. The Halloween reskin of the Knott's theme park throughout the decades has inspired hundreds of haunters and set the bar for what a haunted house should be. The multiple original haunts on site and dozens of characters feel very at home within Knott’s Ghost Town, which off-season is a Western walkthrough.
Through the years Knott’s has hosted and created icons of Halloween - Elvira did years of stage shows and the Jim Henson Company is currently performing as “Puppet Up! Uncensored”. One of Knott’s most famous original characters, the GTS Bride, embodies the spirit of Scary Farm. She seemingly floats through the dimly lit fog of the Ghost Town, carrying with her a candle as she creeps up to unsuspecting visitors. She then suddenly vanishes and the Ghost Town sliders abruptly appear in a quick disruption only to fade back into the darkness.
Knott’s Scary Farm has nine haunts this season, with two that are brand new. As a whole we enjoyed all of the haunts. Our favorite new haunt this year was The Grimoire, which tells the fantastic, original story of a campsite that becomes filled with nightmares after a mysterious book is read out loud. The plot is told with tremendous execution and the atmosphere is enhanced by the incredible sets and props. Our least favorite was Bloodline 1842, where you are given a gun to go hunt vampires. Even though in theory it’s a good story, the experience was slightly chaotic and lackluster and just felt like a reskin of the equally unimpressive Special Ops Infected Maze. However, teens seemed to love this maze.
Every year Scary Farm offers a great dive into the Halloween season. In our opinion, the Ghost Town and original mazes excel at setting the mood for haunt season far beyond what is offered by their rivals, Disney and Universal. The mazes at Knott’s are extremely entertaining, original and give everyone's mind a chance to run wild into a world of horror and imagination.
