REVIEW: HOUSE OF HORRORS

review: HOUSE OF HORRORS

One of our favorite DIY mazes is “House of Horrors”, which is part of the East Whittier Middle School’s annual Harvest Festival. Open for only two nights, this event is a fundraiser for the school’s music program. The Harvest Festival features vendors, live music, and food trucks. However, the main attraction is their haunted house, House of Horrors.

Each Halloween season, House of Horrors has a new theme. This year brought “Sinister Cinema” and featured many infamous horror film villains. You are guided by a movie theater usher through a variety of rooms (created by local volunteers including builders from Knott’s and the Haunted Rose), as you encounter multiple terrifying characters including Sam from Trick 'r Treat, Freddy Krueger, Jason, a skinless child who would creepily stare at you, and more. The production is impressive and greatly enhanced by the boundless energy of the young scare actors - making this an overwhelming and memorable experience for all who attended.

Every October our hearts melt as we witness people creating amazing experiences for their communities, showcasing creativity while raising money for local charities. To us this truly represents the soul and purpose of why art exists - to strengthen communities while engaging in creative collaborations. Halloween is the perfect time for this to happen, as proven by East Whittier Middle School’s Harvest Festival and House of Horrors.
