review: HAUNTINGTON BEACH MANOR

Last year Hauntington Beach Manor put on one of the best haunts we have ever been to. They converted the inside of an abandoned Orange County shopping mall into an incredible, long maze complete with a life size, water filled sewer set. It was one of our most memorable haunt experiences to date.

Due to one of the founders becoming ill, they were uncertain if they would come back this season. However, at the eleventh hour they decided to create a maze. With only two weeks to build and the absence of a key member, the Hauntington Beach Manor team worked tirelessly to bring together this year’s maze.

The maze begins with an actual Tarot Reader who leads you in and reads your fortune (we figured this out by going through twice and having different readings!). Once inside you are immersed in an almost completely blacked out set of corridors filled with fog and green lasers (for the infamous swamp effect). Around every turn you encounter incredible scare actors who appear as dimly lit silhouettes of horned demons and possessed animals. Once you are within the maze’s center you enter a completely white, strobe lit room where your eyes readjust just in time to be spit back out into darkness once again.

If you find yourself haunting in the O.C., go to Hauntington Beach Manor. They are located at the far end of the Dark Harvest parking lot and you can pay them $10 for entrance to the maze at their table. While we do miss their exquisite sets of the past, this year’s maze proves that even in last minute circumstances HM can offer a very fun haunt experience.
