review: haunted tiki island

For the past few years Santa Clarita has been a hot spot for great haunts. Shiver, Beware the Dark Realm, The Farm, Bones Gulch, Pumkin Jack’s, and Club Fear are a few of the many mazes that have been active - making Santa Clarita a thrilling nexus for haunters to explore. The youngest builder of the bunch, Cameron McGuinness of Insane Haunt Productions, started building intricate mazes while still in high school (which we have covered here in the past) and was so talented that he was hired between his own projects to work at Knott’s Scary Farm.

For the 2022 season, young McGuinness has created Haunted Tiki Island. A beach themed, bite-sized maze that makes maximum use of his driveway to take you on a quick horseshoe shaped route through a twisted, neon beach party. While it is a shorter maze, that doesn’t detract from a thoroughly fun adventure filled with tricks and detailed design. As sounds blast you enter a strobe filled world where monsters (or people who have had too many piña coladas) in Tiki shirts jump out at you. There are psychedelic Tiki heads and even an Indiana Jones inspired section where, through the effect of rapidly shooting high pressured air, arrows are shot towards you as you exit.

Outside of the maze, sitting at its center, is a functioning Tiki bar where you can order some refreshing drinks during your wait amongst the torches, surfboards, and moonlight. It’s astounding that McGuinness is already this skilled and was able to build the world of Haunted Tiki Island within his driveway. Though only at the beginning of his haunt career, we are sure that McGuinness’s future in the haunt world is a bright one that will be talked about for many years to come.
