review: THE HAUNTED ROSE

Ever since its initial year as a DIY home maze, we have been enjoying the work of the Haunted Rose. This high quality haunt possesses a unique combination of horror and sci-fi, evolving every season with unpredictable storytelling and memorable adventures.

Now hosted within the Whittier Museum - the Haunted Rose has expanded into a massive, multi-room maze. Inside the museum they have incorporated the permanent exhibits (barns, old Whittier exteriors, and even a downed airplane) to help tell their original, spooky stories. The "trapped in time" ambiance of this museum is particularly useful as a setting for the ancient Lovecraftian themes that are at the heart of the Haunted Rose.

This year's maze entitled "Threshold of Darkness" takes you through a doctor's collection of twisted and monstrous memorabilia rooms where you portal your way into a fantastical world of creatures. Soaked in the Haunted Rose's signature color palette of green and red lighting, you will no doubt encounter a scare around every corner. Along your travels you will enter the "swamp room" which creates the unique illusion that feels like you are sinking as the floor ramps down. You will also encounter the Frankenstein monster who is inhabiting Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde's laboratory. Jekyll and Hyde transform between one another by having two actors in the same outfit, look, and haircut but with completely different physical builds. This fast illusion is quickly achieved when one of the actors falls out of the line of sight and the other actor comes back.

The Haunted Rose's singular nature is in a league of its own. Their masterful storytelling continuously astounds us as they go above and beyond every year - making them a mandatory visit for all Halloween enthusiasts.
