review: HALLOWEENTOWN

As an annual private event thrown for the children of her friends and neighbors, Missi Figueroa’s Halloweentown is one of the most enjoyable mazes of the season. While most mazes rely on darkness and scares, Figueroa instead embraces celebration and positivity. The happy music, colorful neon lighting, and handmade sets create an atmosphere of joy and delight for all the children running amok. Figueroa transforms her driveway into not a typical maze but well, a...town for Halloween!!!

Mazes often utilize tight walls and turns for suspense, but Figueroa has done the opposite. The maze’s route is not created by walls, but instead is shaped by rooms which have been assembled and hand painted from cardboard and a collection of DIY components. Inside each room is a dedicated character who will interact with the children and give them candy. This unique layout creates a wonderful energy for the children, who can't help but look in all directions and be overstimulated with excitement about which character to visit next.

Halloweentown hosts a large assortment of colorful, comedic characters and mini worlds to visit. This season included Super Mario Land, a hippie man, a demonic set of clowns with "rotten candy", a snot filled sneezing woman, an odd man with a mustache, John Lennon during his Sgt. Pepper era, the boy band *NSYNC, and even a zombie plumber inside of a porta potty who was unclogging a toilet filled with hundreds of smaller toilets. Our favorite character was Father Time, who stood in his booth and offered the kids handwritten dad jokes on a series of index cards. However, the most popular figure was a mysterious fortune teller who was behind a set of curtains. She used her electric crystal ball to tell the children their happy fortunes much to the delight of everyone waiting in line.

What we love the most about Halloween is getting to see so many different artistic minds use their talents to create communal events. To us, the purpose of art is to uplift those around you. We always enjoy getting to celebrate Figueroa's annual Halloweentown: a wonderful and happy neon infused world created for friends and neighbors to escape the world's problems and enjoy life.
