review: guru’s little gorehouse

Tucked away inside the suburban guts of Orange County lies Guru’s Little Gorehouse: a disturbing and strange DIY housed within the front yard of Guru’s home. Inside this haunt is a foggy world filled with gore, horror, and bizarre characters.

Guru’s initial simplicity is disconcerting as you enter through nothing more than a small hallway to the sounds of various pitch shifted men’s voices chanting “TurkeyBoy”. After you turn that first corner you are inside a very original DIY maze in which you encounter numerous disfigured characters (all played by scare actors who previously worked at both Dark Harbor and Scary Farm). One of the last things you are able to see is a room filled with the sounds of crying babies where you see a disfigured, plump life-size baby head attached to a torso with lactating breasts. At this point you can hear the characters chanting and taunting, "Come on TurkeyBoy!" from behind the walls.

The maze’s final room is filled with so much fog that you can’t even see your own hands. The erratic strobe lights add to the room’s disorienting effect making it impossible to figure out where you're going. Guru makes great use of a simple prop, a leaf blower, to scare you with jarring sounds and startling spurts of air. At a certain point you will hear voices pleading for help, however you are unable to see who’s around you.

Guru’s Little Gorehouse is a very enjoyable and original maze filled with fun monsters and unique effects. Visit if you dare, TurkeyBoy!
