REVIEW: Field of Screams / The Haunted Stadium
Every Halloween season, Storm Stadium in Lake Elsinore is transformed into “Field of Screams Haunted Stadium”. This annual event is done in partnership with Sinister Valley, and is a collaboration which gets better with every new season. Field of Screams has three mazes: “Dead Rose Hotel”, “Senseless” and “Secrets in the Mist”. Though these mazes offer different narratives, their artistry completes a cohesive grouping.
A very remarkable element of this event is the sound design. While most larger scale haunt events like to blast Dubstep or Metal, Field of Screams employs sounds of the jungle instead. As you enter through a mini walk-through maze you will hear the calls of birds and frogs as you pass by the shadows of trees and spooky caskets. This very original use of sound was a refreshing change from the jarring music of corporate mega-haunts.
The first maze we visited was Dead Rose Hotel, which takes you on a journey through a hotel which is haunted by a murdered woman. And by that we mean that she literally haunts the hotel as the walls swell and breathe. This is very disturbing and is akin to Amityville Horror on steroids. The pacing of this maze was a slow simmer, which we really enjoyed as it made the scares that much more impactful. The second maze, Senseless, was a simpler dark maze that contained energetic scare actors sprinkled throughout.
Our favorite maze was Secrets in the Mist. This is a continuation of the Midsummer Scream cursed temple maze which featured a giant snake breathing fog to a synchronized laser show. With this season’s maze, you continue through a jungle and see the doomed temple, through which you will encounter incredible creatures. The lights are timed to your footsteps and there is an impressive exploding room.
Field of Screams continues to be a thrilling Halloween night out, and we encourage everyone to visit the Haunted Stadium with their family and friends.
