REVIEW: CLUB FEAR
Beginning in 1992 with his series of “Hauntastic” haunts, Jason Shields has become known for his haunted mazes which entertain Santa Clarita residents and visiting haunt-goers. After creating different themed haunts throughout the years, Jason developed Club Fear in 2016. This year’s incarnation of Club Fear is “Nightmares”, and will take you into a glowing green and purple world filled with your darkest dreams.
The Club Fear experience is very impressive and begins with a preshow filled with spooky effects and an ominous narration of scares to come. Once inside the maze you will walk through different themed areas including a swamp room, and you will see characters who meld with the walls. When you exit you will be wished farewell by a chorus of singing Jack-o’-lanterns.
The decor and characters of Club Fear successfully pay homage to the sinister world of Gotham. The facade of the haunt is lit with Joker purple and greens, and within the haunt you can feel the Joker’s presence as well. Characters in the maze wear neon bow ties and have exaggerated chins and noses, and the number 258 can be seen on the building’s address. (Batman issue #258 marks the first appearance of Arkham Asylum.) The fine quality and impressive production value of Club Fear reflects the talent and background of Jason Shields. As a kid he dreamed of becoming a Disney Imagineer, which led him to pursue a degree in entertainment art and animation. Instead of becoming an Imagineer, Jason was able to pursue his own vision within a context which allowed for greater creative freedom. Club Fear creates a world in which nightmares come to life for all who dare visit.
