REVIEW: Bob Baker Marionette Theater’s HaLLoWe'eN SpoOktAcUlAr
Last year we visited Bob Baker’s original theater for the final time. As we took one last stroll through the treasured and historic building, the location of the future home of the theater remained uncertain. Finding the right venue would be a difficult task considering that these spectacular marionette shows would require a space appropriate for both Baker’s legacy and the spirit of his timeless work.
Through determination and good luck, the Bob Baker Marionette troupe found an empty historic theater on Highland Park’s York Blvd. Since working on renovations and breathing new life into the theater, there have been numerous soft opening shows (before the official grand opening next month) including their historic “HaLLoWe'eN SpoOktAcUlAr”. All of their classic Halloween puppets were present, from Dracula and Vampira to the trio of trick-or-treating children. To our great joy, the show felt completely at home in the new space, as if Bob Baker himself was present and smiling and clapping along with the audience.
Bob Baker’s legacy is so unique and special that it is difficult to capture its significance through words. In order to truly understand the magic and wonder of Baker’s shows, you have to experience them in person. We are so thankful to the Bob Baker crew for fighting so hard to continue his legacy by finding a new home for his marionette shows and by continuing to keep his spirit alive through the magic of puppetry. The SpoOktAcUlAr is our favorite puppet show and is not to be missed. We guarantee that you will feel Bob Baker’s presence in the new theater as his marionettes dance and perform to the delight of audiences of all ages.
