REVIEW: beware the dark realm
For decades Scott and the team behind Beware the Dark Realm have been bringing a seasonal home haunt to the great delight of their neighborhood. For most of the time we have been attending it has been an evolving medieval, mystical castle with hundreds of candles illuminating the possessed scare actors and dragons that reside within. This legendary home haunt has been trying out different themes for the past few years, with last year’s theme focusing on witches and this year centering on a haunted Sawmill named "Sugar Pine Sawmill and Mining Co."
The exterior facade and route, which usually takes up the front yard, was abandoned this season. Instead, you go around the home in a way we weren't familiar with - taking us through a series of dark hallways and rooms where ghostly miners and millworkers haunted the pathways. As usual these scare actors performed perfectly with their timing and energy - climaxing with an unhinged character screaming while throwing sparks from his saw within the mill - a creative take on what is usually a chainsaw wielding villain for most mazes. An extra bonus for comedy fans was the special appearance of Tom Scharpling as a scare actor within the mill!
Beware the Dark Realm is a staple haunt to visit every season that it’s open. While we do miss the awesome castle that they usually bring to their home, we welcome them exploring new themes and ideas. Sugar Pine Sawmill and Mining Co. proves that for the foreseeable future Scott and his team will continue to explore new and fun creative ideas and possibly new themes every season.
