Off of the 110 in LA’s Highland Park is Heritage Square Museum - a neighborhood frozen in time from the Los Angeles of the 19th century. This setting creates a great atmosphere for all things spooky, and therefore it made sense that Midsummer Scream and CreepyLA founder, David Markland, would choose this site to host his first ever Halloween attraction, Cemetery Lane.
Markland and his immensely talented team have successfully transformed this museum into a trip back in time to a bygone era of Halloween. The front, wrought iron gates are massive and closed - a “condemned” sign hanging off the rails along with macabre skeletons swaying in the wind. Behind the gate you can see the Victorian mansions of Heritage Square, illuminated in jeweled tones of cobalt blue, pumpkin orange, and blood red. Walking among them and trick-or-treating are guests of all ages, dressed up in Halloween costumes and filling their bags with candy.
After you enter, you are immediately greeted by a 19th century railroad man who is carrying a lantern - which he uses to closely peer at guests. He then guesses what people are dressed up as, doling out humorous interpretations like “Babe Ruth”. This was a great way to immediately engage guests into the world of Cemetery Lane.
Each home we visited (and trick-or-treated) had a different theme, ranging from Vampires/Dracula to Ghosts to our favorite: Witches. Each of these characters were very skilled at comedy improv and engaged in humorous banter with guests, dishing out witty one-liners and hilarious observations. There were also a multitude of beautiful details throughout Cemetery Lane, including a Henry Ravenswood-eque (Phantom Manor) animatronic skeleton overlooking the square from the church bell tower.
Cemetery Lane possesses a wonderful energy filled with the vintage spirit of Halloween. This attraction is a fantastic way to spend the holiday with family and friends of all ages. If you are someone who is tired of jump scares and wants to celebrate Halloween in a beautifully mesmerizing setting, then this is the perfect event for you.
